Berlin Open: Ekaterina Alexandrova and Veronika Kudermetova defeated Coco Gauff and Aryna Sabalenka in the second round of the Berlin Open on Thursday; Venus Williams, who is preparing for her 24th Wimbledon, faces Jelena Ostapenko in Birmingham.
Both Aryna Sabalenka and Coco Gauff were eliminated in the second round of the WTA competition in Berlin.
Sabalenka and Gauff both lost on Thursday after Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina was defeated on Wednesday.
Gauff lost 6-4 6-0 to Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova, who is in top form on grass after winning the Libema Open in the Netherlands last week.
Gauff held an early lead, leading 3-1 in the first set, but dropping 11 of the next 12 games as Alexandrova dominated.
“Maybe the score looks easy, but it’s never like that because she played amazing,” Alexandrova, who won her eighth match in a row, remarked. “To keep it that way, I had to stay focused at all times. I’m simply hoping I can stay in this shape for as long as possible.”
“Grass isn’t my preferred surface, but I play so well on it. And maybe the score looks easy, but it’s never like that because she played incredibly,” Alexandrova, who won her sixth match in a row, said.
“To keep it that way, I had to stay focused at all times. I’m simply hoping I can stay in this shape for as long as possible.”
Alexandrova’s opponent from last week, fellow Russian Veronika Kudermetova, continued her solid form by defeating first seed Sabalenka 6-2 7-6 (7-2).
Both Sabalenka and Gauff were competing in their first competition on grass since the French Open.
“For me, it’s very important to play like that today,” Kudermetova remarked. “I always have faith in myself. I know I can play well, and I always have faith.”
Russian and Belarussian players will return to Wimbledon next month after being prohibited last year due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
