Queen’s: Cameron Norrie advanced to the quarter-finals of the World Championships with a win over Jordan Thompson on Wednesday at Queen’s Club.
To defeat the Australian, British No. 1 Norrie had to come back from a set down.
Norrie, the fifth seed, lost the first game against Thompson but then won the next five games in a 4-6 6-3 6-2 victory.
No. 76 in the world Thompson played brilliantly in the opening set, which he won with a fantastic cross-court backhand winner.
However, the 29-year-old’s forehand failed him down severely as Norrie broke for 4-2 to tie the match.
Norrie broke in the opening game of the fourth set, but he had to save three break opportunities when he served for the match before winning in little under two hours and reaching his sixth quarter-final of the year.
“I think it was a perfect match,” he stated. “Jordan enjoys playing on the grass, and he won the opening set with a few of excellent points.
“I thought I’d played well, so I didn’t have to make many changes. In the third set, I came out with a lot of enthusiasm, and that’s what carried me through.
“It’s great to be that consistent, but as a tennis player, you always want more. I want to keep pushing for more, particularly at larger events.”
Norrie was scheduled to play doubles with Andy Murray later Wednesday evening, but the two-time Wimbledon winner withdrew owing to weariness after losing in the singles on Tuesday.
“He messaged me this morning,” Norrie continued.
“It would be great to play with him. However, I understand. He’s played a lot of matches, and I sense he’s looking forward to Wimbledon. He wants to be as fresh as possible for that.
“Not a big thing for me. It everything makes sense. Hopefully, we’ll be able to play again soon. That’s something I’d want to do.”
Ryan Peniston was unable to repeat his debut run to the quarter-finals from previous year.
The world No. 6 and second seed Holger Rune proved too hot for the 27-year-old from Southend.
