Queen’s Club: Sebastian Korda stopped Cameron Norrie’s pursuit for his maiden grass-court title in the quarter-finals of the British Championship at Queen’s Club.
The British No. 1 was defeated 6-4 7-6 (7-1) by American Korda, the global No. 32.
His failure means that there will be no British interest in singles or doubles at Queen’s Club this weekend for the first time since 2012.
“It’s massive,” Korda, who recently returned from a three-month absence due to a wrist injury, remarked. I’m doing extremely well on grass, I’m feeling at ease, and I’m having a great time here.
“I’m always happy to get as many matches as I can. Right now, everything is clicking.”
Korda, who upset Dan Evans in the first round as well, broke Norrie for 3-2 in the first set and had another break opportunity for 5-2.
Norrie wriggled out of the jam with a couple of aces, but he couldn’t stop Korda from finishing the set in 37 minutes.
Norrie, the runner-up in 2021 and a Wimbledon semi-finalist last year, dragged a break back for 3-3 in the second set, the first time he went anywhere near the Korda serve.
Korda, the son of former Australian Open winner Petr and brother of major champion golfer Nelly, won the tie-break and went to the last four on his Queen’s debut.
Alex De Minaur will play Danish second seed Holger Rune in the first semi-final on Saturday.
De Minaur beat Frenchman Adrian Mannarino 6-4 4-6 6-4 in front of his girlfriend, Britain’s Katie Boulter.
Rune, 20, upset Lorenzo Musetti 6-4 7-5 in a match that was highlighted by the Italian’s overhead straight at him.
“He can do whatever he wants,” Rune pointed out. “I mean, it’s probably not the best thing to do. However, it is once again lawful. He has the ability to hit the ball wherever.
“It just fueled my desire to beat him even harder. I’m overjoyed to have beaten him in two sets. It feels great. He is not in the semi-finals, whereas I am. So I’m happy.”
