Queen’s Club: Carlos Alcaraz advanced to his first career quarter-final on grass with a 6-2 6-3 win against Jiri Lehecka at Queen’s Club.
Much is anticipated of the 20-year-old Spanish star, despite the fact that he is clearly still adjusting to his timing and movement on the grass.
However, this was a significant improvement from his laborious first-round victory over Arthur Rinderknech.
“I’m really happy with the level at which I played today,” he remarked. “I think I had a solid match; I played my game and had a good time here.
“In this type of match, I’m fine with this one. It’s extra practice, and I’m glad to be getting more grass experience.
“The expectation shifts after this match. I believe I’m ready to achieve a good result on grass.”
This week, Alcaraz is aiming for more than only his maiden grass-court title. If he wins at Queen’s Club, he will recover the world No. 1 ranking from Novak Djokovic on Monday.
Alex De Minaur, Andy Murray’s conqueror, defeated Diego Schwartzman 6-2 6-2 and will play France’s Adrian Mannarino, who defeated Taylor Fritz 6-4 7-6 (9-7).
Meanwhile, in the quarter-finals on Friday, British No. 1 Cameron Norrie will meet American Sebastian Korda, who knocked out Britain’s Dan Evans in the first round.
“He’s probably one of the biggest fighters on tour,” said Korda, the world No. 32. He doesn’t offer you a lot of free points.
“I’m expecting a good fight.” It’ll be a lot of fun, and another terrific test for me. Yes, another good match is on the way. It makes me very pleased.”
Mannarino defeated third-seeded Fritz 6-4 7-6 (9-7) on grass, and he charmed the crowd along the way.
Mannarino advanced to the quarter-finals a week after defeating Daniil Medvedev on grass in’s-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands.
Jannik Sinner defeated Lorenzo Sonego in the second round of the Halle Open, winning 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 6-4.
“I’ve played a lot of hours for these couple of matches, but it’s better,” Sinner remarked after reaching his first tour-level quarter-final in’s-Hertogenbosch. “I can touch more balls on the grass courts, which should boost my confidence.”
