Barcelona Open: With a victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets to defend his Barcelona Open crown, world No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz won his third trophy of the 2023 season.
In a match between the top two seeds, the Spaniard Alcaraz, who will turn 20 in May, overcame his Greek opponent 6-3 6-4 to add to his victories in Rio de Janeiro in February and Indian Wells in March.
The teenager won every match he played in at the competition in Barcelona, including the semifinal match on Saturday where he defeated Dan Evans of Great Britain 6-2, 6-2.

“It’s incredible,” said Alcaraz. “To feel this energy and raise the trophy in Barcelona in front of my family and friends, as well as the majority of my team.” Playing this level and winning the award in their presence gives me a fantastic feeling.”
Due to injuries to the elbow and hip of 14-time Roland Garros champion Rafa Nadal and world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who will miss the French Open from May 28 to June 11, respectively, Alcaraz may end up being the frontrunner.
While Djokovic withdrew from next week’s Madrid Open after losing to fellow Serb Dusan Lajovic in the quarterfinals of the Serbia Open on Friday, Nadal has not competed since the Australian Open in January and is unsure when he will do so.
Following his victory over second-seeded Andrey Rublev in the final, Djokovic’s native countryman Lajovic won the Srpska Open in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Lajovic declared: “I am happy and overwhelmed that I did it this week. This is my second ATP Tour victory and first since 2019.
“I have experienced a lot since my last appearance in a final four years ago. Even though last year wasn’t the best for me, I still had confidence in myself. This triumph is really important.”
Britain’s Jamie Murray and New Zealander Michael Venus won the doubles title in Bosnia, but Neal Skupski and Dutchman Wesley Koolhof had to settle for second place in Barcelona after losing to Argentinian partners Maximo Gonzalez and Andres Molteni in a final tie-break.
Holger Rune, a 19-year-old from Denmark, won the BMW Open title in Munich after defeating Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4 1-6 7-6 (7-3) after falling behind 5-2 in the decisive set.
Van de Zandschulp retired seven games into the 2022 championship match, but after serving for the match three times and earning four match points, she was defeated by Rune in the final for the second consecutive year.
Rune said: “I was feeling pretty weary but I was fighting till the finish and I tried everything I could to come back into the match. I needed treatment for arm and ankle issues in the third set.
“I am ecstatic that I successfully defended the title after we really pushed each other to the limit.”
