Wimbledon: On Tuesday, World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz breezed over French veteran Jeremy Chardy to advance to the second round of Wimbledon.
The 20-year-old Spaniard triumphed 6-0, 6-2, 7-5 in an hour and 53 minutes on Court One, putting down a strong marker.
Chardy, 36, said farewell to Wimbledon fans in his final match before retiring 18 years after winning the Wimbledon Boys’ Championship.
“I thought I played really well at the start of the match, but he showed his level in the third set,” Alcaraz remarked.
“I enjoy playing rallies and battles, so to speak, and I’m ecstatic to have played at such a high level and made it through this first round.
“It’s better for me and everyone else without the roof and sun, but I have to concentrate really hard. I love the sound of the ball colliding with the roof.”

Chardy, who has a career-high ranking of 25 in the world, earlier claimed that the match would “be a great end, no matter what.”
He may have changed his mind following a 22-minute first set in which he couldn’t buy a first serve and threw in seven double-faults to gift Alcaraz a bagel for lunch.
The game began just after 1pm, but it wasn’t until almost quarter-to-two that Chardy got a game on the board.
Prior to Queen’s, Alcaraz had only played six matches on grass. He suddenly appears alarmingly at home on the surface, all venomous serves, thundering forehands, sliced backhands, and the occasional superbly concealed drop shot.
Chardy was two sets down in less than an hour, but spurred on by a crowd eager to see at least some action, he converted a break point at the fourth try to lead 4-2 in the third.
However, it was only a brief display of defiance, as Alcaraz broke right back and went on to win in an hour and 53 minutes.
