Madrid Open: Following the successful defence of his Madrid Open crown, Carlos Alcaraz is poised to regain the world’s No. 1 ranking.
After winning in Barcelona a fortnight ago, the Spaniard, who turned 20 on Saturday, defeated Jan-Lennard Struff 6-4 3-6 6-3 to complete the Spanish double for the second year.
If he wins in the nation’s capital and plays the following ATP Tour tournament in Rome, he will replace Novak Djokovic at the top of the rankings.
Rafael Nadal will miss the Italian Open as he continues to recuperate from a hip injury. Novak Djokovic is quickly cementing himself as the favourite for the French Open in light of Alcaraz’s most recent victory.
German Struff, who won the second set to force a decider and advanced to the final of a Masters 1000 competition, gave Alcaraz a difficult encounter.
However, Alcaraz was too strong and prevailed to defend his championship on home clay.
On the ATP Tour website, Alcaraz stated, “For me, it is so, so special. To be able to play and achieve a good result here and [be] a champion is so special.”
“In front of the people in my house, my family, and my friends. everyone who is close to me. It is a unique emotion for me that I will never forget.
“It was a very difficult match. Jan played quite aggressively. It was difficult for me to lose the second set despite having numerous opportunities to break his serve.
“I advised myself to think positively at all times and to take advantage of my opportunities, and I believe I did so in the third set.”
Victoria Azarenka and Beatriz Haddad Maia defeated top-seeded Americans Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula 6-1, 6-4 on Sunday to win the women’s doubles match at the Madrid Open.
Gauff and Pegula were vying for their third championship of the year after having success in Doha and Miami.
