Italian Open: Following a heated exchange in the fourth round of the Italian Open, Novak Djokovic accused Cameron Norrie of acting in an unsportsmanlike manner.
However, there was a spark when Norrie struck Djokovic with a smash, and the handshake at the net lacked any emotion. Ultimately, the world No. 1 won with ease, 6-3, 6-4.
The key talking point occurred when Norrie attempted to retake an early break in the fourth game of the second set.
After giving his opponent an easy overhead, Djokovic turned his back on the play, only for Norrie to inadvertently drive the ball into the Serbian’s knees, to which the latter gave a very intense look.
Speaking to reporters afterwards, Djokovic said that incident didn’t disturb him as much as Norrie’s entire attitude and the medical break he had before the last game.
When he hit me, I did examine the footage, the six-time champion said. “Perhaps you might claim that he didn’t hit me knowingly. I’m not sure if he noticed me.
“I mean, you can always see where the player is on the court (in your peripheral vision). The ball approached the goal really slowly and closely. I didn’t argue the argument; I just turned around.
“It was a mix of things, maybe not so much about it. He was performing all of the permitted actions right away. He is permitted to take a medical break. He is permitted to strike a player. He is permitted to yell “C’mon” at pretty much every opportunity.
“Those are the things that we players know are not fair play and are not how we respect one another in the locker room.
“I’ve gotten along pretty well with Cameron during the years that he’s been on the tour. Together, they exercised. To be honest, I don’t understand this type of mentality on the court since he’s a really kind man off the court.
