Wimbledon: Cameron Norrie, the British No. 1 coming into Wimbledon, has shrugged down injury worries and believes the home crowd can help him go one step farther than last year.
Norrie had strapping around his left knee at Hurlingham on Thursday after being knocked out in the quarter-finals at Queen’s Club by Sebastian Korda last week.
“I’m able to practise as usual,” he said, dismissing any injury concerns. Having some huge days earlier in the week, and then getting these matches, has been fantastic. I’m doing everything I can to deal with it.
“I think the most important thing is to just get out there and put it aside. I’m going to be uncomfortable at times, and that’s just how it is.
“I felt great today and gave a great performance. I’ve arrived at my destination. The matches at Queen’s and here are excellent preparation. This is my fave season. I’m having a great time playing tennis and striking the ball as good as I ever have.”
Norrie will face Czech qualifier Tomas Machac in the first round, but he will have his work cut out to emulate his run to the semi-finals last year.
In the third round, he is seeded to face brilliant young American Korda, and he is in the same division as Andy Murray and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
“I’m exactly where I want to be heading into Wimbledon,” Norrie stated. “Having those matches at Queen’s and here at Hurlingham was excellent preparation. This is my favourite time of year.
“I’m having a great time playing tennis and hitting the ball as well as I ever have, especially coming into the grass.
“A deep run would be nice, but there’s still a long way to go, and I’ll have to take it match by match.”
Norrie, 27, plans to spice up his route into the All England Club by cycling in every other day.
The 12th seed had fond memories of reaching the Wimbledon semi-finals last year before losing in four sets to eventual winner Novak Djokovic.
“I’ll try and use my experiences of going deep in tournaments and knowing that I can do it,” the left-hander says, referring to the home crowd’s backing.
