At the Swiss Indoors in Basel, Andy Murray overcame a set deficit to defeat qualifier Roman Safiullin 6-7 (5-7) 6-3 6-4.
The former world No. 1 overcame a break of service in the deciding set to go on to win five straight games and erase a 4-1 deficit to advance to the next round.
He will now compete against Roberto Bautista Agut, who defeated Laslo Dere 6-4, 6-1.
Sebastian Korda, an American who Murray lost to in the quarterfinals of the Gijon Open earlier in October, was initially Murray’s opponent; however, the American had to withdraw due to an injury. Murray is now ranked 49th in the world.
Despite instantly regaining his composure after having his serve broken in the first set, Safiullin, the world No. 93, won the first set in a tie-break.
Early in the second set, Murray saved five break points and fought back to win the set and tie the match.
When it appeared that Murray would be eliminated from the qualifier, he punched the air after saving the second of three match points. He then saved the fourth breakpoint in the fourth game.
Dan Evans defeated Germany’s Oscar Otte 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), and moved on to Vienna. The Russian Karen Kachanov will be the opponent of the British player.
