2022 ATP Finals: In Turin, Italy, on Wednesday, at the ATP Tour Finals at the Pala Alpitour, Carlos Alcaraz was named the year’s top singles player.
The 19-year-old had a stellar season that earned him a spot in the season-ending competition, but he withdrew from the championships due to a torn muscle. Alcaraz, however, was officially crowned the year’s top player after Stefanos Tsitsipas’ defeat to Novak Djokovic on Monday and Rafael Nadal’s elimination from the semifinals the following day.
In the process, the current US Open champion became the first teenager and the youngest World No. 1 of the year. In front of cheering supporters in Turin, Alcaraz was presented with a glittering trophy for his accomplishment.
Despite not taking part in the competition, Alcaraz entered the ATP Finals week in prime position to finish the year as the world’s top player. There were only two players who had a chance to stop Alcaraz: Rafael Nadal and Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Nadal needed to win the competition, whereas Tsitsipas required a flawless week in Turin. However, the Spaniard was eliminated from semifinal contention after dropping his first two matches in straight sets.
Tsitsipas’ tenuous chances of overtaking Djokovic as the new World No. 1 were ended with his defeat by the Serbian in his opening match. But the Greek, who defeated Daniil Medvedev in a third-set tiebreak to set up a winner-takes-all match with Andrey Rublev, is on track to capture his second ATP Finals crown.
