ATP Tour: Andy Murray maintained composure to defeat fourth seed Alexander Zverev in the Qatar ExxonMobil Open quarterfinal match in Doha.
In the first round, Murray defeated Lorenzo Sonego of Italy in a tie-break of the fourth set. In the Doha final, the Scot had to fight hard to defeat Zverev 7-6 2-6 7-5.
Murray was twice two points away from losing when he served to stay in the match during the 10th game of the final set after Zverev overcame losing the first set in a tie-break to take an early lead in the second set on his way to forcing a decider.
In a match that lasted more than three hours, Murray persevered to tie the score at 5-5, broke the former world No. 2, and then sealed another stunning victory.
Murray stated on the court afterwards: “Naturally, I’d want to win games more quickly, but Alex is a quality player and a fierce opponent.
“One of his greatest qualities is that he always fights to the bitter end, so even after I won the first set in a close match, he didn’t give up, and by the third set, I was barely hanging on. He was creating more opportunities and, for the most part, playing better.
“Yet, I was able to maintain my strength, keep pushing forward, and finally get the breakthrough and finish it strong.”
The eighth seed Botic van de Zandschulp was defeated 6-2, 6-4 by French qualifier Alexandre Muller, who will play the 35-year-old in the round of eight.
Medvedev defeats Broady in a fight
In one hour and 32 minutes, Daniil Medvedev defeated qualifier Liam Broady, winning 6-4, 6-3, and setting up a match against Australian Christopher O’Connell in the round of 16.
Felix Auger-Aliassime, the second seed, overcame a set deficit to defeat Australian Jason Kubler 4-6 6-1 6-4 to advance to the quarterfinals.
After a sluggish start, the Canadian came back to finish in the top eight after two hours and sixteen minutes of play in his Doha debut.
For a spot in the semi-finals, Auger-Aliasime will play seventh-seeded Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, while top-seeded Andrey Rublev defeated Tallon Griekspoor in three sets by saving three match points.
