ATP Tour: Andy Murray lost in straight sets to Roberto Bautista Agut in the round of 16 of the ATP Tour’s Swiss Indoors, sending him packing.
The Spaniard defeated Murray 6-3, 6-2, and will now play either Stan Wawrinka or Brandon Nakashima in the quarterfinals.
The first set was won by Bautista Agut after he overcame an early service break. The second set was won by the Spaniard after he broke Murray’s first and last service games.
Having defeated Murray three times in a row, Bautista Agut has a 3-3 lifetime record against the former world No. 1 and has advanced to the Basel quarterfinals four times.
Norrie departs in astonishment to Austria
American Marcos Giron defeated British No. 1, Cameron Norrie, in straight sets in the second round of the Erste Bank Open, knocking Norrie out of the tournament.
Giron defeated the world No. 13 in 6-3, 6-4 fashion in just one hour, and 21 minutes, therefore ending Norrie’s modest hopes of competing in the ATP Finals later this month.
After a close first set, Giron began to pull away with his second break of the match to win the eighth game and the set, which he eventually won 6-3.
When the score was knotted at 3-3 in the second set, Norrie committed a double fault, which gave Giron the opportunity to break and win the seventh game. With a 5-3 advantage, the American appeared poised to break away once more, but Norrie won the ninth game with back-to-back aces.
Despite the best efforts of the British player, Giron overcame a 15-40 deficit in the tenth game to win the match and advance to the round of eight.
Giron will now play Grigor Dimitrov in the quarterfinals after the Bulgarian defeated Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-4. Giron is ranked 45 spots below Norrie.
