Austin Open: Due to tonsillitis, Emma Raducanu was forced to withdraw from the Austin Open.
The 20-year-old was scheduled to compete in her first match at the new tournament in Texas since losing to Coco Gauff at the Australian Open in January, but she withdrew minutes before the draw overnight.
Raducanu expressed regret about having to withdraw from the ATX Open.
“I presently have tonsillitis, which prevents me from competing this week. I appreciate the tournament’s wonderful hospitality in Austin.”
The winner of the 2021 US Open had agreed to compete in the inaugural WTA Tour event, which gets underway on Monday at the Westwood Country Club.
The competition, which will be the first one to be held in the country during the WTA’s 50th anniversary season, will also feature a 16-team doubles field.
Two sessions, one in the day and one in the evening, will be held on each of the first six days of the ATX Open, which runs from February 27 to March 5.
In her first full season on the tour, Raducanu has suffered with injuries and subpar performance since her stunning victory at Flushing Meadows.
She had high hopes for regaining full fitness this year after putting in the necessary work to improve her fitness and conditioning over the off-season.
An injury scare right before the first Grand Slam of the year was a blow, but she recovered in time for the Australian Open.
She briefly took a break from tennis competition before the French Open, but her withdrawal from the Austin Open is a setback for her fledgling career.
What does Raducanu have to do moving forward?
Sebastien Sachs, who helped Belinda Bencic win the Olympic gold medal and has also coached Germany’s Julia Gorges and former world No. 1 Victoria Azarenka, is Raducanu’s fifth different coach that she has worked with.
In the off-season, Andy Murray’s former physical trainer Jez Green also worked with the British player, and former Olympic champion Monica Puig thinks Raducanu needs an established and stable support system before she can set her sights on the future.
