Australian Open: After losing to Aliona Bolsova in the first round of the Australian Open, Heather Watson became the most well-known British fatality.
English No. 5 Watson lost to her Spanish opponent 7-6 (7-4) 6-3, and her fellow countrymen Sonay Kartal and Paul Jubb also suffered defeats in Melbourne.
Kartal battled back in the second set to force a final against American Elizabeth Mandlik but lost 6-4 3-6 6-1.
Similar events transpired in Jubb’s match against Czech player Dalibor Svrcina after he forced a decider but lost 6-3 1-6 6-4.
Watson fell behind after being broken in her first service game, but she fought back to force a tiebreak in the opening set’s ninth game.
Bolsova, however, claimed four straight games to go up 6-2 and ended the set at the third opportunity following a backhand blunder by the Brit.
In the first game of the second set, Watson responded effectively by breaking the court, but she has broken again right away, preventing her from converting two game points.
Despite the Brit’s valiant efforts to break back and make her opponent serve out, Bolsova broke again for a 4-2 advantage, and the Brit lost in an hour and 47 minutes.
Draper arrives, Evans, and Edmund go for Adelaide.
Dan Evans was eliminated from the Adelaide International 2, but fellow Brit Jack Draper fared better in the tournament’s opening match.
Evans, the No. 5 seed, lost to American rival Mackenzie McDonald 7-5, 7-5.
Evans, the No. 2 player in the United Kingdom, was surpassed by Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, whom Draper, 21, defeated 6-4, 6-2.
Kyle Edmund was also eliminated after falling to Serbia’s sixth-seeded Miomir Kecmanovic 6-4, 7-5.
The Adelaide International 2 is the second of two ATP 250 events that will be held in the city; Novak Djokovic won the first one on Sunday.
With a 6-2 6-4 victory over Karolina Pliskova in the women’s draw, Danielle Collins, the runner-up at the 2017 Australian Open, gave a hint that she might be in line for another deep run at the year’s first Grand Slam.
The American, who was also a semifinalist at Melbourne Park in 2019, got off to a fast start and had a 5-0 lead before the former world No. 1 from the Czech Republic finally recovered part of her once-impressive game and fought back to break.

Collins, the 10th seed, refused to be deterred and won the first set on her fifth set point before breaking Pliskova twice in the second set to secure the triumph.
Petra Kvitova, a former Wimbledon champion, earlier demonstrated her talent by defeating Elena Rybakina, the current holder of the All England Club title, 6-3, 7-5, to maintain her successful start to the new season.
The 2019 Australian Open finalist used a rock-solid serve to win all three break points in the match, converting two of them to set up a matchup with either Shelby Rogers of the United States or Qinwen Zheng of China in the second round.
