On a mixed day for the Britons in Melbourne, Katie Boulter, Jodie Burrage, and Lily Miyazaki advanced to the second round of Australian Open qualification.
Although Liam Broady and Ryan Peniston were eliminated from the men’s draw, Katie Swan was unable to complete a clean sweep for the British team in the women’s draw.
Boulter defeated American Caroline Dolehide 6-3 3-6 7-6 (10-5) after winning the third set tie-break. She will next play Russian Polina Kudermetova on Wednesday.
Burrage defeated Australia’s Elysia Bolton with a score of 6-2 6-4, and Miyazaki defeated fellow American Hailey Baptiste in straight sets, 6-4 7-5.
Miyazaki’s next opponent is Jan Su-Jeong of South Korea, and Burrage will face Barbora Palicova of the Czech Republic.
However, Broady’s chances of qualifying for the main draw ended when he was defeated by Emilio Gomez of Ecuador 6-3 6-7 7-6 (10-7).
Peniston was defeated by Canadian Alexis Galarneau in straight sets, and Swan was defeated by Jessika Ponchet of France in the same manner.
On Monday, the first Grand Slam of 2023 gets underway with Harriet Dart and Emma Raducanu in the women’s draw and Jack Draper, Kyle Edmund, Dan Evans, Andy Murray, and Cameron Norrie in the men’s.
