Australian Open: Emma Raducanu says she expects a “great match” against Coco Gauff at the Australian Open on Wednesday, while Barry Cowan called the second-round clash”fascinating”.
With both having transcended tennis in a way that even the dominant world No. 1 Iga Swiatek has not yet accomplished, the match will likely pit the two biggest young stars in the game against one another.
US Open champion Raducanu struggled at the beginning of her match in Melbourne against German Tamara Korpatsch before settling down to win 6-3 6-2. Gauff also through quickly to the second round after defeating Katerina Siniakova 6-1 6-4.
Gauff, who is still only 18 years old despite being about a year and a half older than Raducanu, should feel more at ease because she is the seventh seed and has much more experience.
British No. 1 said, “I’m really looking forward to this match
Before the highly anticipated match, the British No. 1 said, “I’m really looking forward to this match. I’m definitely game. Coco is performing well and has accomplished a lot of fantastic things.”
“I believe that we are both talented young players who are actually the next generation of tennis players. It will be a fantastic match.”
Gauff has improved since her amazing debut at Wimbledon in 2019 at the age of 15 when she advanced to the fourth round. She gained experience and then took a stride forward last season by reaching the French Open final.
The adolescent has Raducanu’s admiration, who once said of her: “When she initially came (through) at Wimbledon, I think after that it took her a little while to adjust as well, but then she definitely found her feet.
“She is currently demonstrating tremendous physical presence and outstanding tennis skills. She has very powerful weapons and is an excellent athlete. It will be a challenging opponent.”
Gauff has shown Raducanu kindness despite the fact that she doesn’t have a tonne of friends in the locker room. She understands the difficult circumstances the Bromley star put herself in following her remarkable breakout victory.
I chat to her pretty much at all the tournaments, said Gauff
Gauff remarked, “I chat to her pretty much at all the tournaments. In juniors, I didn’t really get to know her all that well, but now that I’m on tour, I need to talk to her more.
“Winning a Slam has probably never made me more excited than I am right now.”
“And in particular, I feel that coming from the UK and doing anything for the first time in a long time puts me under a lot more strain than I’m used to as an American. Although Serena is now retired, she was always regarded as the American to look to.”
