Davis Cup Qualifier: Cameron Norrie’s victory in the second singles rubber of Great Britain’s qualifier in Colombia ensured their entry into the group stage of the 2019 Davis Cup.
The 6-4 6-4 victory by British No. 1 Norrie over Nicolas Mejia in Bogota on Saturday gave Leon Smith’s team a commanding 3-1 advantage.

His victory came after Dan Evans and Neal Skupski had earlier in the day defeated Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah in the doubles to give the visitors their first lead in the match.
Mejia, the No. 253 in the world, upset Evans in the first rubber of the match on Friday, which led to Norrie’s triumph over Nicolas Barrientos, who helped tie the score.
On his second match point, Norrie defeated Mejia in a little more than two hours.

Dan and Neal came out strong, Norrie said. “It was a wonderful day, especially in these conditions in Bogota, with them coming out the fire with a big ask against some of the men of the top double in the world.”
“Being 2-1 up rather than 2-1 down actually gave me a lot of confidence going into my match.
“Mejia was tough; he tried to enlist the support of the fans, but I really made the court my own, was able to put plenty of balls on the court, and once more served exceptionally well.
“Leon and the other guys performed a really nice job. The team was fired up and it wasn’t an easy challenge for us to go through.”
Leon Smith, the team’s captain, expressed “immense” delight in his team’s success, which was achieved despite the Australian Open’s quick turnaround.
Before departing for the UK, Smith remarked, “Feelings are one of enormous pride for what the boys have accomplished, and the support crew – everyone’s invested a lot of effort to this.”
“Hats off to the players; they made a significant commitment by travelling to Colombia, many of them directly from Melbourne. This was done in order to be as prepared as possible for the events of the past two days, and it paid off.
“The players put forth a lot of effort to adjust in a short amount of time, and they fought valiantly on the field.
“It wasn’t necessary for the tennis to be of the highest calibre because of the circumstances, but it did require a lot of grit and perseverance.
