French Open: “I don’t want to talk too much about it because it’s an unpleasant situation for me. I only want to express my regret. I’ve never done something like this in my entire career, and I’m very sorry.” After bouncing her racket into the crowd, Irina-Camelia Begu acknowledges she was lucky not to have defaulted.
Irina-Camelia Begu has apologised for hitting a kid in the face with her racket during the French Open.
The incident happened in the third set of Begu’s second-round victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova when the Romanian threw her racket into the clay and it went toward the audience.
Begu, who checked on the child after the game and posed for photos, described the situation as “embarrassing” and said she was lucky she hasn’t defaulted.
“It’s an embarrassing moment for me, so I don’t want to talk too much about it. I just want to apologise,” said Begu.
“My whole career, I didn’t do something like this, and I feel really bad and sorry. So I’m just going to say again, sorry for the incident.”
Alexander Zverev was ejected from the Mexico Open earlier this season and placed on one-year probation by the ATP Tour after repeatedly assaulting the chair umpire’s stand with his racket.
When Novak Djokovic whacked a line judge with a ball during the US Open in 2020, he was disqualified.
