Novak Djokovic may continue to rewrite men’s tennis history by winning his remarkable 23rd Grand Slam championship at the French Open on Sunday.
Djokovic has been playing catch-up since breaking into the Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal duopoly, but a win over Casper Ruud would put him on his own as the most successful men’s singles player in history.
And, with Federer retired and Nadal on the same path, it appears to be a significant move.
Djokovic would also break Margaret Court’s record by becoming the first guy in history to win at least three Grand Slam championships.
“I have said many times this year during the clay season that Roland Garros is where I want to peak on clay, where I want to play my best tennis,” Djokovic said after defeating a cramping Carlos Alcaraz in the semi-finals to win his 20th successive Grand Slam match.
“As a result, I’ve put myself in a really good position to win another Grand Slam.” That’s what gets me going in the morning when I think about the season and what I want to accomplish.
“This year, I won the first Grand Slam and am now in the finals of the second, so I couldn’t ask for anything more.”
“It’s flattering and wonderful that all of the records are on the line, but I need to win to ensure that I’m on that list. So I know what I have to do now.
“I’ve been very fortunate in that most of the tournament matches I’ve played over the last few years have had history on the line. I enjoy the sensation. It’s a tremendous honour to be able to create history in a sport that I like and that has given me so much.
“As you can expect, motivation is strong. There’s one more to go, and I’m hoping to get my hands on the trophy.”
