French Open: Jessica Pegula, the third seed, lost to Elise Mertens in the third round of the French Open, making her the highest-ranked woman to lose thus far.
Mertens, the 28th seed from Belgium, defeated Philippe Chatrier 6-1 6-3 in what turned out to be a one-sided matchup after American Pegula had lost both of their prior matches.
Food illness may have affected Pegula’s preparations and prevented her from making it through the quarterfinals for just the second time in six Grand Slam tournaments.

The 2021 runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova struggled early on but came back well to defeat the 24th seed Anastasia Potapova 4-6 6-3 6-0 and secure a matchup with Mertens.
Elina Svitolina, a former quarterfinalist at the French Open, defeated Anna Blinkova by a score of 2-6 6-2 7-5 to go to the fourth round of the Roland Garros tournament.
After giving birth to her baby Skai with her husband and fellow tennis player Gael Monfils in April, Svitolina made her WTA Tour comeback at the Charleston Open. She won her first victory in two years by defeating Blinkova in last week’s Strasbourg final.
The audience continued to boo Simonne Mathieu as the match came to a close, and Ukrainian Svitolina chose not to shake hands with her Russian rival. The 28-year-old smiled and spoke briefly with Blinkova, but she didn’t extend her hand.
Next up for Svitolina, a three-time quarterfinalist at the French Open, is ninth seed Daria Kasatkina.
Of the Russian and Belarusian contenders, Kasatkina has been the most outspoken in her opposition to the war.
The second seed Aryna Sabalenka eliminated Kamilla Rakhimova with a score of 6-2, 6-2, and advanced quickly to the fourth round of the French Open.
The world No. 1 Iga Swiatek was defeated by Sabalenka in the Madrid Open final last month. Sabalenka is yet to drop a set in the competition and has finally ended her third-round losing run in Paris.
