French Open: The “amazing warriors” Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal may square off for Grand Slam supremacy at this year’s French Open in Paris, with Monica Puig hoping to witness a “beautiful” struggle between the two tennis greats.
All roads now go to Paris in the spring after Djokovic’s 10th Australian Open victory brought him even with Nadal at the top of the all-time men’s standings with 22 Grand Slam victories.
For those who contend he is the Best Of All Time in the GOAT debate, the Serb contributed another point to their side of the ledger.
He’s 35 years old and shows no signs of slowing down, whereas Nadal, 36, is still recovering from an iliopsoas ailment that caused him to leave Melbourne early.
The Spaniard’s chances of winning the “Sunny Double” in March are still in doubt, as he is still dangerously close to snapping an incredible 18-year record by falling outside the top 10 with points left to play at Indian Wells.
Monica Puig, a former Olympic gold medalist, expects to see Rafael Nadal back in time for the clay-court season and Roland Garros, where he may be headed for a showdown with Novak Djokovic. Nadal has won the French Open 14 times.
Puig told Sky Sports, “I hope so because that’s always a rivalry you love to see. Rafa is the ‘King of Clay,’ Djokovic has won the French Open, and that was just a wonderful match that you love to watch on the court. That will definitely stand the test of time.
“They are both excellent fighters and have a deep understanding of one another. We all want to look forward to that and just enjoy some fantastic tennis with two players who have completely dominated the sport in recent years.”
Puig, who took home a gold medal from the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio, says she can’t even begin to fathom how many Grand Slams Djokovic might win if he stays healthy and fit.
Puig, who announced her retirement from the sport last year after dealing with ailments, stated that “he’s continuing to demonstrate this level and this amount of domination and he hasn’t really struggled with many problems.”
