After winning the San Diego Open over the weekend, Iga Swiatek increased her utter control of the WTA rankings on Monday. Despite dropping the second set, the Pole defeated Donna Vekic of Croatia to win her 64th match of 2022. After Paula Badosa’s defeat by Danielle Collins in the quarterfinals in San Diego, the Spanish player dropped four spots, from fourth to eighth.
After defeating Vekic on Sunday with a score of 6-3 3-6 6-0, Swiatek won her eighth championship of the year.
Swiatek improved her game in the third set, while tournament qualifier Vekic finally seemed to run out of steam when she double-failed on match point, prompting Swiatek to pump her fist and blow a kiss to the fans.
Vekic, who had knee surgery after the Australian Open in 2017, may be proud of her accomplishments after defeating Karolina Pliskova, Danielle Collins, and Aryna Sabalenka, as well as forcing the top-ranked player to a three-set match in the final.
