ITF World Champions 2022: Rafael Nadal has been chosen as the ITF World Champion for his outstanding 2022 campaign, making it his sixth time taking home the title. The Spaniard won the Australian Open and the French Open, bringing his total to 22, in a year in which he took the lead in the Slam race for the first time in his career.
The Melbourne Summer Set at the beginning of the year and the Mexican Open after the Australian Open were two further championships he won during the year. He finished the year at No. 2 in the world, barely behind his fellow countryman Carlos Alcaraz.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion said he was “very thrilled” to get the distinction and expressed his gratitude to his staff and supporters all over the world in his remarks made on the occasion of collecting the award.
I’m overjoyed to win the title of ITF World Champion for the seventh time. I never would have imagined that 14 years later, I’d still be competing at such a high level when I originally won the prize in 2008, remarked Nadal.
“Winning Roland Garros and the Australian Open a second time were both extremely special. I am sincerely appreciative of my team and all of my supporters across the world, and I am eagerly anticipating the 2023 season, Nadal continued.
On the women’s side, WTA No. 1 Iga Swiatek was named the ITF World Champion, becoming the first Polish woman to hold the title. The Pole won four WTA 1000 championships throughout the year in addition to two Majors, the French Open and the US Open, and the longest victory streak in history with her 37-match unbeaten run.
After Ashleigh Barty’s unexpected retirement in March, Swiatek raced to the top of the WTA rankings and never lost it, winning match after match to establish herself as the woman to beat in 2022.
The 21-year-old spoke on the occasion and expressed her gratitude to her team, family, and supporters in Poland as well as all around the world for their support. She claimed that the prize demonstrated how far she had progressed this year.
