Laver Cup: After being sidelined for two months, Novak Djokovic made a spectacular comeback, destroying Frances Tiafoe 6-1, 6-3 at the Laver Cup on Saturday with Roger Federer cheering him on. In his first performance since capturing his record-tying eighth Wimbledon title in July, Djokovic displayed no signs of rust. The 35-year-old quickly backed up his convincing victory over Tiafoe at London’s O2 Arena with a triumph in the doubles against Matteo Berrettini.
In the last round of matches on Sunday, Djokovic and Berrettini defeated Jack Sock and Alex de Minaur 7-5, 6-2 to give Team Europe an 8-4 advantage.
Due to his lack of immunisation, Djokovic, a 21-time Grand Slam champion, was forced to take a vacation from competitive play in September.
He broke in the fourth game and then again in the sixth to win the first set in just 23 minutes, but he was soon back to his usual ways against Tiafoe.
Federer and the rest of Team Europe gathered courtside to applaud Djokovic as he easily won the second set.
“I haven’t played for two months so I’m really glad to have won. It was a pretty decent match from my side,” Djokovic said.
When Tiafoe and Sock defeated Federer and doubles partner Rafael Nadal late on Friday night, the 20-time Grand Slam champion said a sad goodbye to tennis.
The 41-year-old made the decision to retire after the Laver Cup because to knee issues that have kept him out of competition since Wimbledon in 2021. He made the announcement earlier this month.
“We knew it would be an emotional farewell for Roger but we were all taken away by the moment. I think we would all agree this was one of the most beautiful moments anyone has experienced on a tennis court,” Djokovic said.
Due of his physical limitations, Federer was only able to compete in one doubles match, thus Team Europe called in Berrettini to take Federer’s place in the final act of his legendary career.
