Grand Slam: Andy Murray believes that this year’s Wimbledon will not be his last, claiming that he wants to do himself “justice” by doing well before retiring.
Murray was eliminated from the Australian Open in 2019 after losing to Sam Querrey in the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 2017. However, hip resurfacing surgery gave the former world number one a second chance.
The 36-year-old’s recent Nottingham Challenger triumph lifted him to his highest ranking since hip surgery, number 38 in the world.
Murray was ranked 839th in the world in July 2018 while he recovered from his first hip surgery, and participating at Grand Slams seemed a distant dream, but he has fought back and now has high aspirations of returning to the sport’s elite tier.
Murray told Sky News’ Jacquie Beltrao, “I’m very proud after what happened with my hip because I was at the peak of my career when the problem really started, so it was a really tough few years for me, but I also didn’t know when I would be able to compete at the highest level again after I had the operation.
“But I’ve worked really, really hard with my team to get back to this point and give myself a chance to compete in tournaments that I love and play at the highest level again.”
Is this his final Wimbledon?
The Scot enters Wimbledon in good form, having won back-to-back ATP Challenger Tour titles on grass in Surbiton and Nottingham.
Despite losing in the first round at Queen’s Club, Murray has high hopes for the All-England Club next week.
When asked if this was his final Wimbledon, Murray answered, “I hope not, but you never know. That’s why athletes should make the most of their opportunities while they can, because if I suffered another major injury or something happened to my metal hip, I’d be done. I wouldn’t attempt to come back from another operation or major surgery, so I’d want to play a little longer.
“I know it won’t last forever, but I have an idea of when I’d like to finish, and it’s not this year’s Wimbledon.”
