San Diego Open: Prior to losing her quarterfinal match against Danielle Collins at the San Diego Open, Paula Badosa got into an argument with the chair umpire.
Badosa lost a lead against Collins and, after falling behind 7-6 (5), 5-3 in her service game, lost her cool. She sat down on the court and threw her racquet. She finally maintained her serve to lead the second set 5-4. However, the chair umpire believed that she intentionally hit a cameraman and called a code violation, which infuriated the Spaniard.
She stated that she wasn’t targeted at anyone and argued that the chair umpire was callous after such a difficult point.
“You know, there’s the camera initially, before her. Three metres away, I threw it! Yes, after this point and three metres! I mean, are you able to feel some sympathy? Can you feel a little sympathy? No. It wasn’t you. for the first time ever in the game! I threw the racquet for the first time in the game. It’s not a directive from anyone! That’s where it is! Someone’s guidance? No. You are f*cking stupid! She objected.
Badosa was defeated 7-6 (5), 6-4 by Danielle Collins after she won her subsequent service game, setting up a matchup with Donna Vekic of Croatia in the San Diego Open quarterfinals.
Paula Badosa and Danielle Collins are still in the running for the WTA Finals.
The WTA Finals, which will take place in Fort Worth, Texas, from October 31 to November 7, still have the World No. 4 Paula Badosa and World No. 19 Danielle Collins in the running.
Badosa is presently in 11th place in the finals standings. Collins, an Australian Open semifinalist, is currently in 14th place. Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur, and Jessica Pegula are the only players who have already qualified for the competition; the remaining five spots are up for grabs. The current front-runners are Daria Kasatkina, Caroline Garcia, Aryna Sabalenka, and Coco Gauff. Given Simona Halep’s early season exit, Veronika Kudermetova is now the next contender.
The remaining five berths will be decided by the results of the current WTA 500 tournament in San Diego and the future WTA 1000 tournament in Guadalajara.
To have a chance of passing Kudermetova in the standings, Badosa will aim to go at least to the semifinals of the WTA 1000. Collins will need to perform admirably at both the San Diego Open and the Guadalajara Open, though.
