Slovenia Open: Harriet Dart lost in the opening round of the Slovenia Open, so Emma Raducanu will continue to hold the title of British No. 1.
Dart, who is currently rated No. 85 in the world, had a chance to surpass Raducanu, whose ranking has fallen to No. 83 as a result of having to abandon her defence of the US Open title this year.
Dart, however, was upset by Tereza Martincova in Slovenia, and she was eliminated in the first round.
This means that for the time being, there won’t be any changes to the British ranks.
At Portoroz, Dart entered the competition as a fortunate loser and gave her opponent a bagel in the first game before losing 0-6 6-4 6-1.
Later this week, first-seed Raducanu will face Anna-Lena Friedsam in the second round.
Jodie Burrage received better news at the Slovenia Open as she defeated Aleksandra Krunic 6-4, 6-4 and joined her countrywoman Raducanu in the round of 16.
Burrage won after 76 minutes to advance to round two after qualifying for the first round.
Elena Rybakina, the Wimbledon winner, required more than three hours to triumph in Slovenia.
In the end, third-seed Rybakina defeated Laura Siegemund 6-7 (4-7) 6-4 7-6 (10-8) to set up a showdown with Martincova, Dart’s victor.
Another player that advanced to the Chennai Open second round was British No. 6 Katie Swan.
Swan defeated Arianne Hartono 6-1, 6-2, but it did take her an hour and 24 minutes to do so.
The former Australian Open junior finalist’s next opponent is Anastasia Gasanova, who on Tuesday defeated top-seeded Alison Riske-Amritraj 6-2, 6-3.
