The Slovenian Open Round of 16 saw German Anna-Lena Friedsam defeat British No. 1 Emma Raducanu, losing 5-7 6-0 3-6.
The tournament’s top seed, Raducanu, lost to qualifier and world No. 213 Friedsam in the quarterfinals, where she will play Frenchwoman Diane Parry, 20, in a match that was frustrating for Raducanu.
Despite wearing strapping around her left leg while playing, Raducanu’s movement seemed unhindered in the decisive third set as well as the second.
With Friedsam, who is ranked down at 213, but had previously been a top-50 player, in the first set, the British No. 1 started out strong and took a 5-3 lead.
Then Raducanu suffered four straight losses and started to move awkwardly.
She had her left thigh severely strapped and needed a medical break at the end of the first set, but she breezed through the second set before losing in the final set.
After losing in the first round of the US Open, Raducanu’s rating fell to 83. She is scheduled to compete in South Korea the following week, but she should climb back up the rankings after beating Dayana Yastremska on Monday.
Following her first-round loss to seasoned Frenchwoman Alize Cornet at Flushing Meadows last month, Raducanu’s attempt to defend her US Open championship failed at the opening hurdle. The teenager is now working to resurrect her career.
Since parting ways with Torben Beltz in April, the 19-year-old has been without a long-term coach. Although there have been some hopeful indicators during her trial with the Russian Dmitry Tursunov, it is unclear whether she will continue the arrangement in the long run.
