Rankings Record: The longest-tenured No. 1 in tennis history, Novak Djokovic surpasses Steffi Graf’s record to become the only player ever, male or female, to hold that position for 378 weeks.
After holding the number one spot in the world rankings for a record-breaking 378 weeks, Novak Djokovic has surpassed legendary Steffi Graf.
After beginning his 378th week at the top of the men’s rankings, Djokovic has surpassed Graf for the most weeks as the world’s No. 1 player.
The 35-year-old Serbian has finished the year in first place in the rankings a record seven times since he initially rose to the top spot in 2011.
Djokovic won the Australian Open for a record-extending tenth time in January, propelling him back to the top spot for the first time in six months.
After winning his 10th Australian Open championship in January, he started his current run at the top of the global rankings last month.
Djokovic has now held the top spot in the ATP or WTA Rankings for longer than anybody else thanks to his continuous dominance on the ATP Tour circuit.
Between July 2014 and November 2016, he remained at the top for 122 weeks straight, yet he still lags behind Roger Federer, Graf, Serena Williams, Jimmy Connors, and Ivan Lendl.
With 22 major wins, the most Australian Opens ever, and the most Masters titles (38), Djokovic shares the record for the most men’s Grand Slam singles victories with Rafael Nadal.
He accomplished the non-calendar year Grand Slam in singles and made tennis history by becoming the first player to hold the four major titles simultaneously on three distinct surfaces.
However, Djokovic was unable to complete the first calendar-year Grand Slam since 1969 after falling to Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final of 2021.
The world rankings for men were first published in 1973, while those for women followed two years later.
The Dubai Duty-Free Tennis Championships, which begin this week, is where Djokovic will next play.
