Tennis News: England won the first Schroders Battle of the Brits trophy, but Andy and Jamie Murray won what may have been their final match together in Scotland.
The Jamie Murray-organized Scotland vs. England match was well-attended in Aberdeen, drawing some 20,000 spectators over the course of two days to the P&J Live arena.
The Murray brothers were the main draw and it was only fitting that they should have the ultimate say. They defeated Neal Skupski and Dan Evans 6-3 6-4 to give England an 8-4 victory despite having the higher-ranked players.
On the BBC, Andy said: “I sincerely hope that’s not the case, but since we’re growing older and you never know what’s coming up, we need to treat these opportunities as though we might not have them again.
“It was incredible. I was quite proud of Jamie for organising the tournament and all of the players throughout the two days.”
It meant a lot to both of us that everyone showed up, competed well, and got after it to create a terrific event for everyone who came to watch, despite the fact that there was obviously a massive team working behind the scenes to put on the event.
The 35-year-old will travel to Australia encouraged by his performances, particularly Wednesday’s triumph over up-and-coming sensation Jack Draper. On Thursday, he was unable to replicate that against England No. 1 Dan Evans, but it was another tough match that the world No. 27 ultimately prevailed 6-4 3-6. (10-8).
Paul Jubb’s 6-2 6-2 victory over Aidan McHugh in the opening match of the final session gave England the victory.
On Thursday’s opening match, Skupski and Jubb’s 6-4 5-7 victory over Jamie Murray and Jonny O’Mara gave England the lead (10-6).
Jamie had been working on this for two years, ever before Covid-19 abruptly forced the event’s delay last Christmas.
A 36-year-old man spoke: “It was fantastic. Three fantastic sessions made for a fantastic two days. Coming out to Scotland to perform was so much joy, and playing with Andy to close out the night was extremely special.”
