Tennis News: After spending only eight months of his sentence, Boris Becker was released from prison and now faces deportation from the UK.
The three-time Wimbledon winner, 55, was sentenced to two and a half years in prison in April for attempting to evade his debts by concealing loans and assets totaling £2.5 million.
The former world No. 1 and BBC commentator filed for bankruptcy on June 21, 2017, owing creditors about £50 million because of an unpaid debt of more than £3 million on his Majorcan estate.
According to the PA news agency, Becker, who has resided in the UK since 2012, was scheduled to serve half of his term in prison but was released on Thursday morning and is now scheduled to board an aircraft for deportation from the country.
The German is believed to have been moved from Category B Wandsworth Prison in south-west London to Category C Huntercombe Prison near Henley-on-Thames in Oxfordshire in May, a lower security jail for foreign criminals awaiting deportation.
The six-time Grand Slam winner was automatically deported because he is a foreign national without British citizenship and was given a sentence that included more than 12 months of incarceration.
Becker allegedly acquired over £950,000 from the sale of a Mercedes dealership in Germany earlier this year. Becker allegedly used this money as his “piggy bank” for personal purposes, depositing it into a business account.
Becker was found guilty of concealing a bank loan for about £700,000, shares in a tech company, and moving hundreds of thousands of dollars to other accounts, including that of his ex-wife and estranged wife.
Nine of the 20 allegations on which he was cleared related to failing to turn up awards and medals from his tennis career.
