United Cup: The 2023 international tennis season will begin with a new $15 million (£13 million) mixed competition comprising teams from 18 different countries competing in matches across three Australian cities, Tennis Australia announced on Friday.
The inaugural United Cup, which will take the place of the short-lived ATP Cup men’s team competition, will begin on December 29 and continue through the January 8 final in Sydney.
The four men and four women on each national team will compete in round-robin matches in Brisbane and Perth during the group stage of the competition, which will provide ATP and WTA ranking points.

The competition is the most recent effort to produce interesting content for fans in the beginning of the year, when the best tennis players in the world are in Australia getting ready for the first Grand Slam of the year.
The ATP Cup was a three-year cooperative project between Tennis Australia and the men’s tour that featured high-profile players and substantial prize money but struggled to draw spectators and deal with logistical issues during the Covid controversy.
From 1989 until 2019, Perth hosted the more well-known Hopman Cup mixed team tournament, but it was discontinued to make room for the ATP Cup.
The new competition also reflects increased collaboration between the men’s and women’s tours, which have taken steps to streamline the game’s governance since the global health crisis severely interrupted the 2020 season.
The United Cup represents a significant advancement for tennis, according to ATP president Andrea Gaudenzi.
We’re eager to witness the top male and female athletes competing against one another, with ranking points on the line, to kick off the season in an unprecedented way.
