Wimbledon 2023: Daniil Medvedev asserts that despite his country’s ongoing invasion of neighbouring Ukraine, he will respect Wimbledon’s decision regarding the participation of Russian players in the competition this year.
The only Grand Slam last year to ban players from Russia and its partner Belarus, including then-No. men’s 1 Medvedev, was Wimbledon. Event organisers anticipate revealing their stance for this year’s competition soon.
“I won’t say anything new because I’ve said it so often. I support peace,” During the Indian Wells event in California, Medvedev spoke to the media.
The sixth-ranked player in the world and 2021 US Open champion said he would love to play but won’t try to sway event organisers.
“I’m not going to decide for them or even assist them in making this choice. They must succeed independently for their various reasons, just like they did the previous year,” he remarked.
“And I’ve always claimed that I’ll respect this choice. Tennis is my career, so I play whenever I can, but I would be thrilled to compete at Wimbledon. I adore that competition, but if it’s not meant to be, I’ll wait till I get another chance to go.”
The Wimbledon organisers said in a statement to Sky Sports News on Thursday that they were “continue to work very closely” on this problem with the UK Government and other important tennis stakeholders.
“We haven’t yet decided who will compete in The Championships in 2023.”
Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus, the winner of the Australian Open, shared Medvedev’s comments, claiming that she had no influence over the decision but that being suspended the previous year had a negative impact.
“People’s responses and a few other things made me feel incredibly guilty and like this was my fault,” she said.
“But then I understood that I had no control over this. I committed no wrongdoing against Ukrainians. It’s not my fault at all.”
Around 100,000 people are estimated to have died or been injured as a result of the war by Western military officials. While millions of people have fled the possibility of conflict, it is equally possible that tens of thousands of civilians have perished.
To safeguard its security, Moscow refers to the fight as a “special military operation” and claims that it is targeting civilians.
