Transgender Boxing Category: One of the four main boxing-sanctioning bodies, the WBC, is putting out a new classification to accommodate transgender boxers in the sport.
The WBC may or may not approve of a new championship or title belt. They primarily want to organise an event so that transgender athletes can compete in the sport.
“[When a match might be authorised] is unknown to us. Currently, the sport is what interests us. Safety is first, obviously, for all athletes. We don’t know where this could go, but if there is a common group of [trans] athletes that encourages more people to seek out and register,” Sky Sports was informed by WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman.
“We want to develop a transgender boxing programme, nevertheless. Not necessarily a championship or a belt. So that people can be included in boxing and not excluded, it is merely a competition.”
They must first gauge how many people would be interested in taking part in such an event.
“We assembled this, and we will be working. In order to assist them and create a boxing programme, we are attempting to determine the number of potential athletes that are out there,” explained Sulaiman.
According to their intentions for the new category, the WBC would adopt the “at birth” rule, which would limit a trans fighter’s ability to compete against other trans fighters who were also classified as males at birth.
“During the [WBC] convention, the technical and medical committees met. The WBC has decided that it will vehemently oppose any born man fighting a born woman,” stated Sulaiman.
“We established a group to develop a transgender boxing programme that can accommodate athletes who want to compete in the sport. However, there is definitely no man against women in this programme.
“The situation must be addressed,” he continued. It’s not a game to box.
“You don’t make goals or beat speed records. This needed to be addressed. If there are future athletes who want to box, we must include them and provide them with the opportunity.”
