NBA News: In their most recent effort to regain relevance in the NBA, the Detroit Pistons have decided to employ Monty Williams, the former head coach of the Phoenix Suns; the contract, which may be worth up to $100 million over eight years, depends on club options and incentives.
The hiring of former Phoenix Suns head coach Monty Williams by the Detroit Pistons has been finalised.
Two years after making it to the NBA Finals and a year after being named the league’s coach of the year, Phoenix dismissed Williams a few weeks ago.
The 51-year-old played with the Suns for four regular seasons, winning 63% of his games, but the team was defeated by the Denver Nuggets in the Western Conference semifinals.
The Pistons will be overjoyed to have his experience on staff as they strive to better their dismal regular season record from the previous season, in which they lost 65 games and won just 17 of them for the NBA’s lowest record.
According to reports, depending on club options and incentives, the contract could last eight years and be worth $100 million.
They have not had much luck this season, unfortunately.
With one year remaining on his contract, Dwane Casey quit as coach to pursue a position in the front office. Then, Detroit won the No. 5 choice for the second consecutive year in the draught lottery, losing the chance to sign the 7-foot-3 French phenomenon Victor Wembanyama, who was selected by the San Antonio Spurs.
If the Pistons want to change the tide, all of their current talent must stay with the team. The team has not won a postseason game since 2008 when they made it to the Eastern Conference finals for the sixth consecutive season.
With their performances last year, Jaden Ivey and Jalen Duren—the fifth and thirteenth overall selections in last summer’s draft—did offer optimism for the future. The No. 1 overall choice in 2021, Cade Cunningham, had his second season derailed by shin surgery after participating in just 12 games.
His return will ensure that this team, despite its youth, has experienced captains.
