NBA Rumors: Clint Capela of the Atlanta Hawks is reported to have attracted the attention of numerous NBA executives. We examine the factors driving interest in the Hawks big man as HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto learns more about the situation.
The Hawks have undoubtedly become an intriguing club to watch after adding Dejounte Murray in a major deal during the offseason. Murray, Trae Young, and John Collins make up the trio that gives Atlanta a dynamic young core with a flair for the game.
The Atlanta Hawks have undoubtedly benefited from the addition of Murray as they currently hold a 10-7 record for the year. However, there have recently been rumours that some of their players may be of interest to the entire league.
A somewhat recent rumour claimed that Utah Jazz were interested in Hawks standout big man John Collins. Collins’ name was also mentioned in trade discussions throughout the offseason.
The star big man is currently the subject of some trade rumours. The Hawks might draw more attention, though, as league-wide interest in Clint Capela from rival executives was reported by Michael Scotto.
Scotto made reference to this in his piece when he said:
“With former sixth-round pick Onyeka Okongwu waiting in the wings, executives looking to upgrade the frontcourt are keeping an eye on [John] Collins and Capela’s trade value.”
Since the previous season, Onyeka Okongwu has developed significantly. In this sense, it makes sense to be interested in a large man like Capela who is still active and productive despite his age.
The Hawks’ current strategy for dealing with Collins, though, is an intriguing argument to make in this situation. Atlanta may be inclined to trade the top big man after speaking with the Suns.
Shams Charania’s report claims that the Suns might not be interested in completing this transaction because Collins is currently under an expensive contract. Collins’ deal value, $125 million over five years, may make him less valuable to other teams than other big men.
While this is happening, Capela appears to be a more appealing trade target for teams. Capela is a much more affordable player who can contribute significantly more on both ends of the floor thanks to a two-year extension he signed with the Hawks during the offseason.
As more teams gauge Capela’s availability in the future, Atlanta may be faced with a challenging situation.
