Phoenix Suns: When Kevin Durant requested a trade from the Brooklyn Nets, the Phoenix Suns were allegedly in the lead to get him. Phoenix made many offers since it was aware of the exorbitant amount it would have to pay to sign Durant. Cam Johnson, however, was not included in the trade discussions.
According to Jake Fischer of Yahoo Sports, Johnson was not included in the trade because Suns management was adamant about it. One source did claim, though, that they did in fact include him in the offer.
Sean Marks, the general manager of the Brooklyn Nets, kept pressing for more and eventually decided to include Cam Johnson. Ultimately, none of the discussions produced anything. They had to accept the Indiana Pacers’ offer for Deandre Ayton, which made it nearly difficult for them to acquire Durant.
Cam Johnson’s performance has received high praise from Suns coach Monty Williams, especially since last season, when he made a breakthrough. The third-year forward shot 46% overall, including 42.5% from outside the arc, and averaged 12.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.5 assists per game.
Johnson’s 3-point shooting improved the most. He shot 34.9% in 2020–21. The Phoenix Suns wanted him to be more assertive last season, and he showed that he wasn’t scared to take a shot at such moments.
Cam Johnson took advantage of his opportunities in some of the games Devin Booker missed. Against the New York Knicks, he scored a career-high 38 points, including a buzzer-beating 30-foot shot that helped the Knicks win 115-114.
The University of North Carolina graduate made 9 out of 12 3-pointers, with the game-winning shot being the biggest and most dramatic.
Cam Johnson is anticipated to start at forward for the Phoenix Suns
It became evident that the Phoenix Suns had great intentions for Cam Johnson when the Brooklyn Nets were unable to trade him in exchange for Kevin Durant. Jae Crowder, a starting power forward who was in the final year of his deal, was replaced by another player for Phoenix.
According to Jake Fischer’s report, the Suns have chosen to start Johnson over Crowder. The Suns intend to re-sign Johnson for four years and $72 million when he becomes eligible for an extension.
