World Title Rematch: As both combatants agreed to rematch in March in Glasgow, Jack Catterall made fun of Josh Taylor by warning him not to overindulge in Christmas turkey.
The highly anticipated rematch between the two fighters was confirmed by Boxxer on Thursday. An official date announcement, in keeping with co-promoters Top Rank, will be made in the coming months.
Last February, Catterall lost a contentious split decision to Taylor, the then-undisputed world champion, in Glasgow. As a result, the Scotsman was compelled to give up three of his super-lightweight championships in order to pursue a rematch.
When asked if Taylor received his message, Catterall told Sky Sports News: “Not too much turkey, Fatboy. I’ll see you in the new year.”
Catterall’s career-opening defeat to Taylor was tightly contested, and the 29-year-old is anxious to show that his most recent performance wasn’t an aberration when the two square off for the WBO title again in March.
“For me, the focus is more on defeating Josh this time, demonstrating to the public that Taylor didn’t just have a bad night and that I am capable of competing on a global scale.
“I’ve always wanted to be world champion, and over the past few years, I’ve been getting closer to realising that goal. [The fight not being an undisputed battle] changes things a little bit.
“Becoming the world champion is motivation enough. Although I can see right through Josh, it would be good if I went out and brought the division together myself.”
Taylor will not be given a break during the holiday season, according to Catterall, who is attempting to hand Taylor his first defeat as a professional.
He declared that “business as usual” would continue. “You have to make compromises if you want to be a professional athlete. Christmas and New Year’s are postponed because of the war that will occur early the next year.
“I’ll be able to see my family, but I won’t be participating in the festivities. I’ll give the rematch everything I’ve got.”
