British Cruiserweight Champion: Mikael Lawal defeated David Jamieson through stoppage while putting on his signature show of strength to win the British cruiserweight title.
At Alexandra Palace, the fight lasted eight rounds and featured back-and-forth momentum shifts before Jamieson was forced to stop due to what appeared to be a significant jaw injury.
With 11 victories coming inside the distance, Lawal’s perfect professional record now stands at 17-0, positioning him well for bigger fights in the thriving British cruiserweight scene in 2023.
In a three-round tournament in 2019, Lawal defeated Jamieson en route to winning Ultimate Boxxer, but the Scotsman quickly indicated that this matchup would be more competitive.
In the second round, Lawal was shaken by a looping right hand, and the London fighter was forced to cling on as he attempted to flee Jamieson’s continuing assault.
The next round saw thudding blows between Jamieson and Lawal, with Jamieson continuing to prevail, but Lawal gradually started to impose himself.
A left hook that the Nigerian-born fighter landed early in the sixth round that seemed to shake Jamieson served as a reminder of his growth. Lawal would finish the round with a few cutting blows to take the lead even further.
In a brutal seventh round, Jamieson increased the pressure as Lawal complained to the referee about an unpunished low blow, but he eventually collected himself and finished the round on the offensive.
Lawal again prevailed in the eighth round, but just as it seemed the fight was headed for a spectacular conclusion, Jamieson was pulled from the fight by his corner with blood pouring from his mouth.
Sam Gilley defeated Sean Robinson on points in a convincing victory to retain his title as the English super-welterweight.
In the fight between two London fighters who had previously sparred together, Robinson made a strong start, but a Gilley left hook late in the fourth round wobbled his opponent and ultimately changed the outcome of the fight.
As the fight entered the sixth round, the champion’s confidence grew, and he nearly stopped it with a devastating right hand that knocked Robinson to the ground.
The challenger did well to survive the round since Gilley didn’t try too hard to finish after the knockdown, seemingly concerned about using up all of his energy.
Gilley was able to easily win a unanimous vote despite Robinson’s best efforts to mount an implausible comeback in the closing moments as he gradually regained his composure. Gilley improved to 15-1 for his career with scores of 98-91 from two judges and 97-93 from the third.
With a convincing points victory over Ivanka Ivanova in the first six-round match of her career, Shannon Ryan made an impression.
