Lightweight Title Match: Promoter Bob Arum tells Sky Sports that Devin Haney’s upcoming match, in which he will defend his undisputed lightweight title against Vasiliy Lomachenko, is “basically made.”
Unbeaten American star Haney defeated George Kambosos twice in Australia in a magnificent 2022, uniting all four of the main lightweight titles in their first match before defending his unchallenged title.
However, after serving in Ukraine during Russia’s invasion of that nation earlier this year, former lightweight champion Lomachenko made his comeback in October.
In a thrilling 12-round fight at Madison Square Garden, Lomachenko defeated Jamaine Ortiz, re-establishing himself as one of the top contenders in the 135-pound class.
Promoter Bob Arum of Top Rank confirmed that Haney vs. Lomachenko will take place in 2023.
“That fight is very much set up. The location and the time will soon be revealed, according to Arum, who spoke to Sky Sports.” Devin joined us for lunch and they were all ready, so I had lunch with Devin’s father, Bill Haney.
“They are great individuals. The combat will take place either before or immediately following Ramadan. Devin practises Islam, therefore we are unable to do it during Ramadan, but we are able to do it before or after. So I talked to the Haneys about all of that,” Arum continued.
“But they’re supporting the conflict.”
In that weight division, there are intriguing matchups to be had, especially with Shakur Stevenson moving up to 135 pounds in 2023.
“There are many talented young fighters,” Arum observed. “they’re all excellent lightweights. The classification for lightweights is still active.”
Haney, though, is large for their weight and it is anticipated that following his match with Lomachenko, he will go up to 140 pounds.
Teofimo Lopez, who notably defeated Lomachenko in 2020, is the man Arum believes he might face in a super-lightweight matchup right away.
“For Lopez, Regis Prograis is a potential match. Teofimo could pursue other options. He might decide to take on another fight and, if Haney defeats Lomachenko, match him up against Teofimo in a non-title bout. That would be a major conflict. There are many other directions that these men can go,” Explained Arum.
Top Rank is already involved in another significant undisputed title fight that is in the process of being scheduled for next year, even though Tyson Fury and Oleksandr Usyk’s heavyweight bout is almost ready to go into final negotiations.
“Even though 2022 has been a terrific year,” Arum predicted that 2023 will be even better.
