Boxing Fight: Where will Devin Haney go from here?
The camp of Haney’s beaten opponent Vasiliy Lomachenko intends to appeal the outcome of Saturday’s undisputed lightweight title fight, which saw Haney retain all four titles by way of a controversial unanimous decision. Nevertheless, the undefeated American is already considering his next opponent.
The major choice Haney, who has a record of 30-0 (15), must make is whether to remain at lightweight or go up to super-lightweight in order to compete for more titles. However, after his victory on Saturday, the 24-year-old did not completely rule anything out.
Haney, who claimed that it has never been easy for him to make weight at the 135lb lightweight limit, stated, “Me and my crew are going back to the house, watching the fight and reflecting on it.”
“For a very, very long period, I was at 135. My 30th bout is right now. Since I was 16 years old, I’ve worked at 135 since.
“We’re going back to the lab to determine what comes next,”
If Haney decides to step up to 140 pounds, he may face the victor of next month’s fight between Teofimo Lopez and Scotland’s Josh Taylor, the WBO champion.
While staying at lightweight would allow him a match with Shakur Stevenson or Gervonta “Tank” Davis, both of whom are Americans.
Haney, for his part, is convinced that he will eventually face the devastating Davis, who has amassed 27 stoppages in his unblemished 29-fight professional record.
“I proved I’m a draw in the sport of boxing and proved people want to see me,” Haney said.
“Me and Tank are going to have a big fight, and it will happen soon.”
Stevenson, who saw the fight between Lomachenko and Haney from the stands in Las Vegas, was among those who vocally expressed their opinion that the judges ought to have chosen the Ukrainian over Haney.
The 2016 Olympic silver medalist, who has a perfect 20-0 record with 10 stoppages since entering the professional ranks, didn’t see anything in Haney’s arsenal that would significantly challenge him, so he requested to fight the undisputed king next.
