Boxing Fight: When he takes on Vasiliy Lomachenko in Las Vegas on Saturday night, undefeated lightweight champion Devin Haney says he is on a “different level” and aims to be recognised on a pound-for-pound basis.
When Haney faces off against one of the all-time greats, ‘The Matrix’ Lomachenko, in the MGM Grand, he hopes to establish his legacy.
Haney told Sky Sports, “I think this fight is going to put me much higher on the pound-for-pound list. It will confirm my status as a true champion. Undisputedly the finest fighter in the world and the leader of his division.”
The Dream stated: “I want to shock the globe and show the world how wonderful I really am. I want to make a statement and put some of the doubters to rest with a career-defining performance. After this battle, I want people to treat me fairly and accept the Devin Haney hype.”
When Lomachenko challenges the unbeaten Haney for his WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO, and The Ring championships, he will try to retake control of the lightweight division.
The Ukrainian is currently focused on making a comeback to the top of boxing after losing three of the lightweight belts to Teofimo Lopez of New York, who was then unbeaten, in October 2020. Incredibly, 14 out of his 15 fights before losing to Lopez involved a world championship, making this fight his first featuring one in over three years.
The two-time Olympic champion enters a championship battle as the underdog for the first time in his professional career, but despite the possibility of big-money matches against Shakur Stevenson and Gervonta Davis in the near future, Haney isn’t looking beyond his illustrious opponent.
“The key objective is to get through Loma first. I’m unable to ignore him,” Haney remarked.
“Once I win and put on a tremendous show, we’ll consider any fight that makes sense. But Loma is currently my major priority.”
Haney is aware of the intrigue and is open to the prospective fight after sparring between the two was made public. Stevenson is also a successful Olympian who won a silver medal at Rio 2016.
