Boxing Live: Savannah Marshall is certain that Claressa Shields and her will fight once again as a result of their intense rivalry.
In October, the American champion defeated Hartlepool’s Marshall in a significant undisputed middleweight contest.
On July 1, the British fighter will face undisputed 168-pound world champion Franchon Crews-Dezurn after rebounding from her defeat.
Shields will defend her undisputed middleweight title this weekend in Detroit. She squares off against Maricela Cornejo, a last-minute substitute for Hanna Gabriels, who was supposed to be Shields’ opponent but was dropped after a Voluntary Anti-Doping Association test revealed a positive finding
If they both prevail in their upcoming battles, Marshall predicts that she and Shields will soon be back in a fight.
According to Marshall, “I’ve seen how my profile grew just from that one fight and I believe that it was down to the rivalry massively,” he told Sky Sports.
“All the talk right now is, ‘When’s the rematch? When is the next game? That is the essence of boxing. It’s a company. You won’t necessarily struggle if you don’t have a rival. But it takes place there.
“People want to fight in those. Where a little needle is present.”
Marshall is the featured opponent in Manchester versus Crews-Dezurn, another American who has trained with Shields in advance of the fight.
“Look, I lost; I’m no longer the champion. However, I have support, and people want to see me compete. This battle has already generated a lot of attention, and I don’t believe Shields appreciates that,” Marshall remarked.
If flying to the US is necessary to get the rematch with Shields, the Briton is willing to do it.
However, Marshall emphasised: “She wanted me to travel to America. I concurred. I promised to visit America, but I want compensation. It doesn’t make as much money there as it does here. She could be realising it now.
“I think we’ll get there eventually,” she added. “She and I are equally dependent on one another. She would never earn as much money battling someone else as she would against me.
“I’ve discovered that’s what boxing is all about. People enjoy conflict. People enjoy seeing people argue who truly despise one another.”
