Boxing Rematch: Claressa Shields has stated that a rematch with Savannah Marshall must take place in America if Britain’s new undisputed champion wishes to exact retribution.
Marshall won all of the world super-middleweight belts with a majority decision victory against Franchon Crews-Dezurn on Saturday night at The AO Arena in Manchester.
The Hartlepool boxer’s victory generated speculation of a rematch with Shields, who was watching from the stands, but America’s multi-weight champion urged that Marshall return to her own country.
“If Savannah comes to the United States, I’ll fight her at whatever weight she wants,” Shields stated to Sky Sports.
“She’ll get beaten up in America, for sure.
“[I saw] a lot of flaws, and she didn’t learn from her mistakes last night.
“I agreed with the first judge, who gave it a 95-95.
“It was a close fight.
“I expected a better performance from both girls.”
Marshall was defeated by Shields in an undisputed world middleweight title battle at The O2 in October, but she thinks Shields will go up a division for the rematch.
“Sweet dreams,” Marshall said, according to Sky Sports. “I can’t put into words how I’m feeling right now.
“A tough, tough woman, I think I broke my hand on her head.
“Some of the rounds were close, but I felt I got the better work.
“Let’s do it if she (Shields) wants it (the rematch).
“I’m sure she’ll want to try and unify another division.”
Shields will be lured up to a heavier weight, according to promoter Ben Shalom.
“She (Marshall) could have taken much easier options,” he told Sky Sports. “But this shows what a champion she is. This is her body weight. This is where she feels at ease.
“She earned it. She’s given it her all, and I’m thrilled for her. What comes next? I believe we know what comes next.
“I believe it has to be at super-middleweight because Savannah is the best fighter in the world at that weight. That is where the rematch must take place.
“I’ve never seen anything like Savannah’s support. She’s performed in the O2, and now the Manchester Arena; it’s great, and she deserves it. What a champion of the people she is!”
