Boxing News: Chantelle Cameron of the United Kingdom defeated Jessica McCaskill by a unanimous decision on Saturday to claim the title of undisputed super-lightweight champion.
The judges scored Cameron’s victory over her American opponent at the Eithad Arena in Abu Dhabi 97-93, 96-94, and 96-94.
It serves as the pinnacle of Cameron’s remarkable career in the sport. The Northampton boxer, who has gone unbeaten in 17 fights, won the WBC 140-pound crown in 2020, and she added the IBF crown to her collection last year when she fought Mary McGee.
Cameron successfully defends his WBO and WBA crowns with this bout, giving him all four major titles.
Being victorious over McCaskill is particularly amazing considering that the American, who lost to Katie Taylor for the lightweight world title in 2017, was the uncontested champion at welterweight.
Bivol achieves again another triumph
Russia’s Dmitry Bivol, who earlier this year defeated Mexican superstar Canelo Alvarez, made a comeback on the same card. He faced Gilberto Ramirez, a Mexican opponent, to defend his WBA light-heavyweight title.
Ramirez, a super-middleweight world champion who had moved up to light-heavyweight in 2019, was facing Bivol in his first world title battle at 175 pounds. Ramirez had gone undefeated in 44 of his previous contests.
Bivol has proven to be superior. He grabbed control of the match and ultimately defeated Ramirez, winning handily. He voted 118-110 twice, and 117-111 the third time.
Zelfa Barrett of Manchester made a valiant bid to win the vacant IBF super-featherweight title in the undercard bout against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov, but he was stopped after nine rounds.
Joe Cordina of Wales had lost the championship due to an injury, so Barrett stepped up to compete.
Rakhimov was defeated by the Englishman’s powerful uppercut. Rakhimov, though, knocked Barrett to the ground twice when he was on unsteady legs in order to win by stoppage.
Olympic gold medalist Galal Yafai defeated Gohan Rodriguez Garcia through split decision in his third professional fight, which went the full distance for the first time.
Kal Yafai, the older brother, defeated Jerald Paclar but had to pick himself up off the canvas to fight his way through to win a majority decision. This was Kal Yafai’s first boxing match since he lost his world title to Roman Gonzalez in 2020.
