Boxing News: “My current plan is to come back in May. In January, I’m going to start punching to see how it makes me feel, and then we’ll see. The plan is to return in May with a less-than-competitive bout to gauge my reaction before attempting to face Bivol again in September.” – Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, the undisputed super-middleweight champion, has said that he plans to return to the ring in May after having surgery for a left wrist injury.
The Mexican defeated Gennadiy Golovkin twice to end their trilogy of fights in September, following which he declared he required surgery. He may now look to challenge Dmitry Bivol, the WBA light-heavyweight champion, who he lost to in May.
“My current plan is to come back in May. I’m going to begin punching in January to gauge my reaction, and then we’ll see “said Alvarez.
“The plan is to return in May with a not-so-tough fight to see how I feel and to pursue a rematch with Bivol in September, which is the only thing I want right now in my career,” said the fighter.
This month, the World Boxing Council announced that the victor of the fight between David Benavidez and Caleb Plant, scheduled for March, will be Alvarez’s required opponent.
We’ll see how the fight plays out; I believe Benavidez will prevail, but my attention is on the rematch with Bivol, Alvarez said.
