Undisputed Super-Middleweight: Despite knocking John Ryder to the ground, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez had to settle for a tough unanimous decision victory in Mexico over the valiant British adversary.
After failing to knock out Ryder in the fifth round, the Mexican superstar defeated Ryder on points with scores of 118-109, 118-109, and 120-107 in his homecoming contest.
Canelo persisted in his pursuit of a rematch with Dmitry Bivol, who defeated him for the WBA light-heavyweight belt in May on points.
In front of more than 50,000 people on Saturday night, Canelo defended his championship as the undisputed super middleweight champion in his first fight in Mexico since 2011.
Ryder’s nose was broken in the victory for Alvarez, who improved his record to 59-2-2.
When the bout was over, Canelo allegedly said, “I hit him too much in the head and he didn’t fall down. It becomes troublesome because, as I have always said, they usually give me the fight of their lives when they engage in combat with me.”
Ryder, who has a record of 32-6, claimed that his four-bout winning streak was broken as a result of the injury he sustained to his nose in the second round.
Ryder said, “He’s definitely past his best,” at a press conference. “He tried to stop me but was unable to move me from that spot. It could have been a little different if it hadn’t been for my nose; it took me a few rounds to get used to it.”
Canelo’s Saturday bout was his first after having surgery on his left wrist in March of last year. He said the ailment had slowed him down in his previous four fights, including his loss to light heavyweight champion Bivol a year earlier.
In September, Canelo hopes to face the Russians again after narrowly defeating Ryder.
Canelo continued, “That’s what we’re shooting for, but we’ll see.
