Boxing News: The WBO super-lightweight champion Josh Taylor has refuted suggestions that he is delaying a rematch with Jack Catterall.
Following their highly charged first match, Scotland’s Taylor was ready to box his formidable foe once more.
However, the highly anticipated second fight was called off shortly before it could be announced due to a damaged plantar fascia tendon in his heel.
Taylor must now defend his title against American superstar Teofimo Lopez, according to the WBO.
“I am no longer challenged and I am battling on the road. It would be absurd for me to imply that I am terrified of Catterall,” Taylor told Sky Sports. “I only laugh.”
“No one wanted to correct this situation more than I did. But it will take place.”
Taylor actually held all four of the main 140-pound championships, but in order to guarantee the Catterall rematch, he gave up three of them so he wouldn’t be sidetracked by other required challenges.
Then the harm occurred. “On Monday of the Chris Eubank-Liam Smith fight week, I did it. I did it during a fight. I only felt a pop, a tear, and just excruciating pain,” He clarified.
“I immediately stopped sparring, pulled the boot off, and my heal was raw, swollen, and irritated. I had a doctor’s appointment on Tuesday and a scan on Wednesday. On Thursday, I received the test results, and they showed that the injury was a full rip.
“My foot had become immobile. It was fairly awful. You’ve been off your feet for at least six to seven weeks.”
The Scotsman, who had been given the win following a first fight that many observers believed Catterall edged, had been keen to “put all the doubt that was there to bed.”
“I was prepared to advance in my career when it occurred. I simply have to roll with the punches because it’s one of those things that happens “.
Taylor uttered, “I’m gutted. The fight at Liam Smith fight was going to be announced. I was quite disappointed since I gave up a lot and made many sacrifices to make this battle possible, including giving up my titles.”
His plans, however, have been altered as a result of the WBO’s interference.
After losing the WBO, IBF, and WBA lightweight titles to George Kambosos, Lopez went up to 140 pounds and became the undisputed champion. He defeated Pedro Campa in his first victory in his new division, and he later defeated Sandor Martin by a narrow margin.
