Boxing News: Josh Taylor has received harsh criticism from Jack Catterall for cancelling their anticipated rematch.
In 2022, Taylor defeated Catterall in an extremely contentious split decision. The second battle between the two foes was scheduled to take place in the first three months of this year.
Josh Taylor, the WBO champion, injured his heel and tore a tendon just before they could declare their rematch.
Given the extra time, the WBO has told Taylor to defend against Teofimo Lopez, the former lightweight champion, as required.
All four of the main super-lightweight titles were previously held by Taylor. To avoid being distracted from the proposed Catterall rematch by other mandatory challenges, he withdrew from three of them. The Scotsman drew the line, though, when it came to giving up his last championship trophy.
But, Catterall claimed that because of the importance of their rematch, a title would not be necessary for it to go place.
“He spoke of making numerous sacrifices in order to carry out the conflict. Without a world title, I think the bout with Josh is significant enough to take place,” Catterall told Sky Sports.
“Fight me without a championship if he truly believes he can defeat me and then increase the weight to 147 pounds. I’d be up for that completely.
“Yet suddenly, he’s maintaining his 140-pound weight while competing against Lopez for the WBO. I don’t understand it at all.
“Let’s do it without a world title if he’s that certain of defeating me and then moving up.”
Catterall criticised the decision that would have Taylor now face Lopez.
“Josh Taylor requires all of my energy,” Catterall stated.
“I no longer have any faith in him. He has often withdrawn from fights, but this time was the cherry on top: a week after withdrawing, he announced negotiations with another fighter at 140 pounds.
“It’s time to concentrate on me since I don’t like the way it sounds. In addition to wanting to compete for global titles, I have a family to support.”
In order for Taylor to face José Ramirez for the uncontested championship in 2021, Catterall stood aside. However, as a result of the drama between the rivals, Catterall has only boxed once since November 2020.
“It has been tough,” Catterall said, and in the end Josh has kept me out of the ring now coming up for another year.
“It is insufficient. Josh was kind enough to challenge for undisputed while I stood aside, and I believe he gave me something in return. We got into a brawl. But, we have witnessed the dispute.
“He continuously runs counter to himself. Jesus will “give me the opportunity to make things right.” As much as he claims to have won the battle, he definitely thinks that something wasn’t quite right.
“It’s time to let Josh go. I can’t keep putting off my job while I wait for him.”
